Scholarships in Canada - Ph.D and M.Sc. Graduate Student Research Positions

Project:  SEPN is a large-scale research project on sustainability education policy and practice in Canada (EC-12 and PSE).  SEPN is led by Dr. Marcia McKenzie and housed in the Sustainability Education Research Institute (SERI) at the University of Saskatchewan, a research centre with the overarching goal of furthering research and action on land, place, environment, and sustainability in relation to educational research, policy, and practice.
Potential thesis topics include (1) in-depth site analyses at the PSE level to examine existing place and community practices as they inform understandings of the impact and gaps of sustainability policy in education in relation to multiple sectors; (2) analysis of national survey data to examine the relationships between sustainability practices and communities and sustainability policy in EC-12 or PSE in Canada; or (3) an examination of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada (AANDC) policies, community and/or First Nations schools’ policies, and/or Aboriginal PSE institutional policies in relation to sustainability education, potentially including a historical examination of Indigenous philosophical principles of environmental stewardship and interconnectedness in relation to education.  One or more students may be paired to work closely with lead partner organizations.

Qualifications
Education:
A Bachelor degree is required and students must be currently enrolled or applying to a graduate program at either the Master’s or PhD level at the University of Saskatchewan.
Experience: Knowledge and experience in conducting research; Familiarity with a range of research methods; Experience interacting with collaborators and working with multidisciplinary teams; Background in critical policy analysis and/or community-based research an asset.
Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills; Excellent communication skills (written and verbal); Strong research skills; Ability to work productively, both individually and in groups; Ability to work independently, following timelines to complete work in an efficient manner.
Conditions:  Students will undertake research assistant work on the project, as well as undertake their thesis research on one aspect of the project.  Graduate student researcher stipends are $15,000 (Master’s) and $18,000 (PhD), plus benefits, or as negotiated in terms of contract.  Current hiring is for positions commencing September 2014, with up to two years of funding for Master’s students and three years of funding for PhD students. Students are expected to complete their thesis research on the project during this period.
Research assistant responsibilities will vary but may include: (1) data collection, (2) data entry and management, (3) conducting background research and report writing, and (4) other clerical and organizational duties as required.
Academic Study: Students will work with faculty in Educational Foundations or the School of Environment and Sustainability (SENS) at the University of Saskatchewan (with a preference for the Master’s student to work out of Educational Foundations and the PhD student to work out of SENS).  If not current students, students will need to also apply to one of those units by the application deadline of February 15th (applications submitted past that deadline may be reviewed).

Scholarships in Canada - New Faculty Graduate Student Research Position

Description: Dr, Pei-Ying Lin from the College of Education, Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education is seeking a new full time Masters student who is interested in writing a thesis in one of her research areas: Assessment policy analysis for students with special needs, or Data analysis of student performance data.

Duties: The student will work on relevant research projects and must conduct his/her thesis based on one of the projects. This student is expected to complete a thesis during the funding period.

Stipend: This is a stipend of approximately $15,000 per year up to two years. This will be paid in monthly installments at the end of each month. Please note the amount includes all payroll deductions and benefits.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will be a student who has educational background in related areas: quantitative psychology, applied statistics, special education, educational assessment/measurement, and/or educational policy. To obtain this stipend, the candidate must be qualified and admitted to the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education of the University of Saskatchewan and supervised by Dr. Lin. Active knowledge of English and French as well as relevant research experience is preferred. The student must also meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for this position: they must be a new full-time and fully qualified Masters student in a thesis program, have a minimum average of 80%, and they must meet the departmental standards as indicated in the devolved scholarship plan on
file at the College of Graduate Studies and Research.

Conditions: As the purpose of this position is to provide the student with the opportunity to focus on their studies, remuneration from outside employment unrelated to the graduate program must not exceed 12 hours a week, and
they may not accept this position if they hold another award valued at more than half the remuneration of this position.

M.Sc. Scholarship in Canada = Bioremediation, Mine Water Treatment and Geoenvironmental Engineering


The Department of Civil and Geological Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada is looking for highly motivated master students who want to participate in cutting-edge environmental research under the supervision of Dr. Won Jae Chang. Dr. Chang’s lab focuses on exploring innovative remedial processes and technologies for engineered and natural environments impacted by natural resource developments such as oil sands, gas and potash in Canada. Students will perform graduate research in the area of bioremediation, mine water treatment or permeable reactive barrier design. The research projects are funded by oil, gas and mining industries in Canada.
Graduate students in Dr. Chang’s lab will receive unique training in multidisciplinary research environments, such as the synchrotron-based facilities at the Canadian Light Source (http://www.lightsource.ca/), to experience the wide spectrum of environmental engineering research from the physicochemical to the microbiological aspects.
Qualifications: The candidates are required to have a bachelor degree in engineering (civil, environmental, biological/biotechnology), geological science, environmental microbiology, or in other closely related environmental engineering or science programs. Applicants must also meet the minimum requirements for admission into the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Graduate Studies and Research (http://www.usask.ca/cgsr/). International students who are not from English-speaking countries must submit the results of English proficiency tests.
Starting date: Immediately, between May and July 2014 (earliest preferred)
